Monitoring Visit to Bupul, Muting and Selil

2 – 6 April 2012 – Seven days, a team of SKP-KAME, altogether with 3 researchers of  Sayogyo Institute (SAINS) of Bogor, have visited villages of Bupul, Muting, and Selil. The visit is part of periodical monitoring to observe recent development on social, cultural, and economic life of local communities and its relation with the hot issues of investment plan in the area. In Bupul, the team have discussed with the villagers about an investment plan by PT. CCM (Central Cipta Murdaya) for a palm-oil estate. The company have started to approach and negotiate with local communities but the people still doubt and worried, even some confusing on whether receive or reject the plan. They said that they are certainly want to improve their livelihood but, at the same time, not want to release their rights on their own ancestral land and forest.

Days after, the team continued the monitoring trip to Muting and spent one night there did similar discussion with the villagers. Then, continued the trip to Selil where the team met with the Head of Village, local elders of customary council and church committee. The villagers informed the team that a company namely PT BIA (Bio Inti Agrindo) have started their operation in the area, inside ancestral land of local communities.***KH

Training for Village Council of Nasem

10 March 2012 — SKP KAME have assigned a local lawyer, Guntur Ohoiwutun, to facilitate a training for local Village Council (Badan Musyawarah Kampung, BAMUSKAM –Ed) of Nasem Village. The focus of training is how to organize an effective meeting and deliberating process to proceed village regulations (Peraturan Kampung, PERKAM –Ed) which is prepared and drafted before. The One Day Training was attended by representatives of local elders, village administration officers, church committee members, women, and youth.

Rather than just verbal lecture, Mr. Ohoiwutun have facilitated all participants to simulate the real legislation process at village level. All of the participants said that they are satisfied with that kind of method and hope that SKP-KAME can continously facilitate them in similar ways. ***SYN

Visitation to Zanegi, Buepe and Wayau

27 February – 7 March 2012 — Four staffs of SKP-KAME have visited three villages in the hot-spot area of land concession today, i.e. Zanegi, Buepe, and Wayau. The visitation was purposed to explore various problems related to the presence of companies in the area and its impacts on daily livelihood of local communities. In the villages, SKP-KAME team have met with local elders of Customary Council, Church Committee, Village  Administration Officers, and representative of various groups of communities.

In Zanegi, the villagers have informed SKP-KAME team about the presence of PT SIS (Selaras Inti Semesta) and their promises so far to the villagers. In Wayau, SKP-KAME have carefully listened to the comments of local villagers about recent activities of PT ARN (Anugerah Rejeki Nusantara) who are conducting an intensive preliminary survey for their investment plan. The Wayau people have expressed their anxiety and fears about possibilities to face similar disastrous impacts which is already happened in their neighbouring villages of Zanegi and Buepe.***KMH

Visit to Koa Village: People Reject to Release Their Land

9 – 11 Januari 2012 – Program officer of SKP-KAME, Oktovianus Waken, and a volunteer, Hendrikus Eperi, have visited Village of Koa in Animha District of Merauke. The purpose of visitation is to get current information about situation of the village and daily life conditions of villagers, especially in education, health services, and household economy, including its relations with the waves of incoming big scale investments into their land and forest.  The two days visitation have made series of informal meetings with local customary councils or adat leaders, elders of clans, and church councellors. mmissioners. All of them gave information that some officials of incoming company, PT Hardaya Sugar Plantation (Hardaya Group), have came and met with villagers of Koa. However, there is still no agreements have been made between the villagers and the company.

According to the villagers, all of them have agreed not to release their own ancestral land and forest to the company. The land and the forest are sacred heritage of their ancestors and will be heritaged further to their children and gradnchildren. They do not want to loose their main sources of livelihood.**(OW).

Focus Group Discussion of Kumbe Parish

5 – 6 December 2011 — in the Community Education Hall of Kumbe was held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) attended by 13 participants of local communties of Kaiburse, Onggari, Domande, Koa, Zanegi, dan Wayau villages. The discussion based on the theme of advent of 2011: ‘Survive for Life’. The discussion was facilitated by SKP KAME with Father Hendrikus Kariwop, MSC (Chairperson of Commission of Education of Archdiocese of Merauke) as resource speaker. Father Kariwop especially emphasized the urgency of education of values in the family. In the first day, after rsource speaker, all of participants have been asked to identify problems of education in their respective villages and highlighted which are very important and needed immediate actions to resolve. Based on that infromation, all of participants, in the second day, formulated a work plan, among others, to write an appeal letter to the government of Merauke Regency to build a boarding house for schoolchildren in Kumbe, especially for students of local junior and senior high schools. **OW & CT
