Situation of energy supplies and consumption for the villagers in southern Papua

Not Paid, No More Electricity

In Wayau Village, there is a diesel generator for electricity procured with grant of PNPM Mandiri (national project fund for community development — Ed.). For that facilities, we have regularly paid IDR 30,000 (about USD 3.5) per month per household. Recently, the electricity was black out since many villagers not continously paid the fee. Finally, our elders meeting concluded and suggested that may better no electricity at all.

Villagers Hope Electricity Before Christmas

In three hamlets of Urumb, Waninggap Nanggo, and  Matara ini, our parents before, since 1980s, have asked local government to install electricity facilities. The demand have realized long time after, in August 2010. The State Electricity Company (Perusahaan Luistrik Negara, PLN –Ed.) at the time cut all of manggo and coconut trees in front of our houses, replaced them with iron columns of electricity network. In the hamlet of Urumb, electricity cables also already installed into every houses but not yet in other two hamlets, Waninggap Naggo and Matara. We ask government to accomplish the installation, so, we can enjoying electricity lights before Christmas this year. If not, we would accuse the Head of Village to pay such a compensation of IDR 5 millions (USD 555) for each of our manggo and coconut tress that have been cut by PLN before.

Electricity Finally Came into Village
