Company Did Land Reclamation, Flood!

March 14, 2012, about 3 o’clock early morning, a big flood coming into our houses. We are still slept at the time. We have immediately woke up since the water already reach our bedroom, even to the kitchen, reach up about one meter height. Wehave hurried up to take a refuge. and the flood was over after three days, on March 17. Every year, there is routine flood happened in our residential area but this time is really unusual, bigger and higher. We have found that is because of land reclamation by a company, CV Marindo, which made water canals stucks. We hope the government take a serious attention in this matter, please!

In his campaign rallies for Regent, Romanus Mbaraka have given a promise to us, the residents nearby Naval Base (MAKO LANTAMAL) in Nowari area outskirt of Merauke Town. At the time, Mr. Mbaraka –have won the election and now the Regent of Merauke– himself came to visit and asked us whether we want to stay in this area or move to new settlement in Buti Beach area. We have chosen and agreed to move since we want a better housing facilities and living environment. Alas, no signs until today that the promise would be realized. Mr. Regent, can you pay more attention to our situation here…?

Tidal Wave Hits Villagers’ Houses

On March 13, a big tidal wave hit our houses in Payum Beach, outskirt of Merauke Town. The wave reach up to 1 meter height. Some houses were destroyed. I myself kept staying in the village to guard our local church but many villagers took refuge into public facilities (Vocational Training Center) in Lepro or to the District Office and houses of their relatives in town, The wave was lso intruded into our wells and made the water can not be drinked anymore. We must go to our neighbouring village, to the houses of Bugis-Makassar people there, to get clean drinking water.
